Meet our Scientific Leadership Team Pain Experts

At Metrion, our strength lies in the expertise of our people.

We’re proud to introduce two scientific leaders driving ion channel drug discovery and pain research:

Together, Eddy and Tony bring over 50 years of combined experience spanning academia, biotechnology, CROs and global pharmaceutical organisations.

Eddy brings more than 25 years of experience in ion channel drug discovery across pharma, biotech and CRO environments, underpinned by a strong academic background. Throughout his career, he has focused on advancing our understanding of pain and neurological disease, with deep expertise in ion channel biology and a substantial publication record.

Eddy’s career highlights include:

  • More than 25 years in ion channel drug discovery within pharma, biotech and CRO environments
  • Led multiple potassium channel discovery programmes and held senior roles within NaV1.7 and NaV1.8 pain programmes
  • Senior leadership roles at Pfizer, including Head of Electrophysiology and membership of the Pain Research Unit leadership team
  • Leading a TRPA1 discovery collaboration with a major global pharmaceutical company during his time as CSO at Ario Pharma
  • Building and leading ion channel research groups at NeuroSolutions and BioFocus
  • Postdoctoral positions at Parke-Davis, UK, and the University of Cambridge, including research into the role of sodium channels in pain
  • Author of more than 30 peer-reviewed publications, reflecting his long-standing contribution to ion channel biology

Today, Eddy’s scientific depth and industry experience enables him to help clients accelerate their ion channel drug discovery through deep biological insight, innovative screening approaches, and decades of hands-on expertise.

Tony brings more than 25 years of experience in ion channel research and drug discovery across academia and industry. As a co-founder of Metrion, he combines deep scientific expertise with a strong track record in translating ion channel biology into meaningful therapeutic opportunities for partners worldwide.

Tony’s career highlights include:

  • More than 25 years of ion channel expertise spanning neuroscience research, translational biology and drug discovery
  • Pioneering work on NaV1.7, NaV1.8 and NaV1.9 sodium channels, advancing understanding of pain signalling and channelopathies
  • Drug discovery leadership at AstraZeneca, where he served as lead biologist on multiple hit-to-lead ion channel programmes
  • Roles at Xention and NeuroSolutions focused on ion channel discovery and translational assay development
  • Postdoctoral research in the Waxman lab at Yale University investigating NaV1.7 mutations linked to pain disorders such as erythromelalgia and developing innovative approaches to study their effects on neuronal function
  • Leadership at Metrion, overseeing collaborative drug discovery programmes and helping shape the company’s neuroscience strategy
  • Author of more than 30 peer-reviewed publications, contributing extensively to the scientific understanding of ion channels and pain biology

Today, Tony continues to lead collaborative drug discovery programmes at Metrion, applying his experience to enable clients to address complex challenges in ion channel biology and pain research.
