Celebrating 50 years of HASAWA and its impact on workplace safety

by Siân Leech-Mills PhD, Laboratory & Safety Manager

I recently attended the Institute of Safety in Technology and Research (ISTR) autumn symposium in Sheffield, titled “50 Years of HASAWA: What's That Ever Done for Me?”. The Health and Safety at Work Act has positively impacted the workplace approach to risk assessment and improved the standards of safety for both the workforce and members of the public.

When I began my journey with Metrion Biosciences in 2022, one of the key attractions was the company’s commitment to its core values: excellence, respect, leadership, integrity, and teamwork. Over the past two years, I’ve been fortunate to play a pivotal role in advancing health and safety (H&S) within the company.

With enthusiastic engagement from staff, we’ve cultivated a robust H&S culture, ensuring we continuously prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of everyone at Metrion. The company has also demonstrated unwavering support by funding internal and external training programs in areas such as:

  • Risk assessment
  • DSE assessment
  • Manual handling
  • Biological safety
  • Shipping dangerous and biological goods (IATA)
  • Pressurized gas and cryogenic systems
  • Legionella awareness

As part of my role, I’ve collaborated with top-tier consultants specializing in general health and safety, biological safety, and fire safety. Together, we’ve worked to apply the principles of HASAWA 1974 in a practical, meaningful way, aligned with Metrion’s core values.

I’m truly grateful for the ongoing support and dedication of colleagues across all levels of the organization. Their commitment empowers us to uphold high safety standards while fostering a culture of excellence and respect.

Here’s to celebrating another 50 years of HASAWA and its continued contributions to workplace safety and well-being!
